Donna Summer was born La Donna Adrienne Gaines in Boston  in 1948.  She grew up singing in church choirs  and like so many greats before her, gospel music became her foundation.  She was inspired by powerhouse vocalists like Mahalia Jackson and Aretha Franklin. But it was a move to Germany in the late 60s that set her on a path to stardom. She landed a role in the musical Hare, met producer Giorgio Morota,

and together they changed music forever. Now you can't talk about Donna Summer without talking about Love to Love You Baby, the song that scandalised and electrified the airwaves in 1975. A hypnotic sultry 17 minute groove that some radio stations refused to play while others couldn't get enough of it. It was a turning point for dance music pushing boundaries and making Donna Summer an international star. From there, hit after hit followed.

I Feel Love, Last Dance, Bad Girls,  On the Radio, she dominated the late 70s. What made her stand out wasn't just her incredible voice, but the way she embraced technology. I Feel Love, produced by Merota, was groundbreaking. A fully electric track that paved the way for synth pop and modern dance music. The song alone changed the landscape of music, influencing everyone from David Bowie to the Pet Shop Boys.

But as the 70s gave way to the 80s, disco fell out of favour. The Disco Sucks movement in the US was brutal, culminating in the infamous Disco Demolition Night in 1979, where thousands gathered to destroy disco records. But Donna Summer didn't disappear, she evolved. She moved into rock and pop with The Wanderer and had a massive comeback with She Works Hard for the Money in 1983, an anthem that resonated with working women everywhere.

The song was inspired by a real life encounter she had with a restroom attendant. A moment that touched her so deeply she wrote the song in just one sitting.

She continued making music throughout the 80s and 90s, experimenting with gospel and R &B, and proving she was more than just a disco icon. She also became an outspoken Christian artist in later years, balancing faith with her musical legacy. And in 2012, the world lost her too soon to cancer, at age just 63.

Donna Summer may be gone, but her impact on music is still felt today. Artists like Madonna, Beyonce, even Daft Punk have drawn inspiration from her work. In 2013, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, an overdue recognition of her influence. And let's be honest, can you even go to a wedding or party without hearing last dance?  It's a timeless classic,  and so was she.

ability to blend storytelling with dance beats made her unique  and her influence can still be heard  in modern dance music  and pop.
